Cash on Delivery is one of the most widely payment methods in many markets such as India. However, COD orders have high RTO rates.
DelightChat already has an automoated COD Order Confirmation feature to help reduce uncertainty and RTOs with COD orders.
We have also launched a way to convert COD Orders to Prepaid via WhatsApp if the customer confirms the order.
How it works:
- Customer is sent a COD order confirmation message.
- If customer confirms order, DelightChat can send another message asking if they want to convert to prepaid.
- Brands can include a automatic discount in this message.
- DelightChat analytics will show you how many customers confirmed order and how many then converted to prepaid alongwith their total order value.
With DelightChat, you can send automated COD Convert to Prepaid messages using the Official WhatsApp API for Shopify stores.

Send COD Convert to Prepaid messages via WhatsApp API
Step 1
Open WhatsApp Marketing > Automations in the app and select the automation from the list.
Step 2
This step assumes you have already configured the COD Confirmation order. If you haven't, please read this guide.
Find this section on the page: Convert COD to Prepaid Order
Enable the checkbox: "Send COD to Prepaid message"
The message template configuration will become visible.
Set a message delay:
this is counted from the time when customer confirms the COD order.
Step 3
Create a new message template to send to your customers asking them to prepay the COD order. We have provided a default message template below that you can use.
Default message template:
Hi {{1}}, thank you for confirming your COD order with {{2}}. We will process the order and ship it soon.
Exclusive offer: Pay now for your COD order and get {{3}} on the entire order value.
Get offer: {{4}}
Configure the message template:
In the example template shared above, the variables would resolve this way:
- Customer First Name
- Brand Name
- Value + Text: 5% OFF (or any discount amount)
- Invoice URL
Invoice URL is the link that the customer will use to pay for the order. It will lead the customer to a identical draft order in Shopify. The customer simply needs to choose the payment method and complete the order.
Include discount:
A small incentive can help nudge more users to convert their COD order to prepaid. We recommend setting a 5% discount. You can also set a flat discount (say ₹75 off) instead of % discount.
DelightChat can automatically generate this discount and apply it to the draft order that the customer will access using {InvoiceURL} variable.
Step 4
DelightChat can perform follow-on actions if the customer converts their COD order to prepaid. You can find this in the section named: If COD Order Converts to Prepaid
Cancel the original COD order
This will cancel the COD order that the customer originally placed in Shopify. This action will happen only after the customer completes the new draft order that is created in the COD to Prepaid flow.
Add tag to original COD order
A tag will be added to the original COD order. This tag will contain the #orderID of the newly generated order created by DelightChat.
Add tag to newly created order
A tag will also be added to the newly generated order. This tag will contain the #orderID of the original COD order that got converted to Prepaid.
COD To Prepaid Conversion Analytics
DelightChat automatically tracks the following metrics, all of which can be found under the "Analytics" tab.
- Messages successfully sent, delivered, read
- COD Orders converted to Prepaid
- Value of orders converted to Prepaid
You can also download the analytics data and analyze it further, such as seeing the exact order IDs that got converted to prepaid.
